At the foot of Angers Castle
Seventeen towers of schist and tuffeau shape the unmistakable silhouette of Angers Castle, which shelters the Apocalypse Tapestry, a medieval masterpiece seventy metres long. Climbing the ramparts to admire the Maine and the slate roofs makes for a memorable date. The castle’s inner gardens then offer a quiet pause for two.
Place du Ralliement and city centre
Place du Ralliement, around the theatre, is Angers’s living room. Café terraces overflow as soon as fine weather arrives, and Saint-Maurice Cathedral stands only a few steps away. The splendid carved timber-framed Adam’s House is worth a close look to spot its mocking figures. A first drink here, then slowly up to Rue Saint-Laud.
Old streets and the Maine riverside
Rue Saint-Laud, cobbled and pedestrianised, gathers wine bars and restaurants to extend the evening. A little further, Verdun Bridge opens onto La Doutre and its half-timbered houses. On Lyad, people from Angers share their favourite corners; it is up to you to find someone to cross the bridges and keep the conversation going.
